Discuss more than houses with your agent
Have you ever spoken with a real estate agent about buying a home? My experience is that too often these conversations revolve around an agent asking what the buyer wants and then just reacting to the material things like number of bedrooms, garage or no garage, reasonable commute, etc I suggest you take it one step further and discuss your lifestyle with your agent. Are you very social? Are you active in your church or temple? Do you like to garden? Your agent is supposed to know more about homes than just walls and commutes.

Working for a home buyer is kind of like being a match maker. I want you to like your home, where it's located, what activities are readily available and the overall feeling the property gives them.
When you are ready to buy, I suggest you follow a few steps:
- Identify things in your life that make you happy
- How much time will you spend at home vs. on the go
- What do you want your neighborhood to like
- How much time and money are you willing to dedicate to your new home
If you can, get out and drive around to areas that interest you. It's okay if you can't reasonably afford the neighborhood. What's important is that you identify the things that you like. Armed with this information, you should interview your agent to make sure they can help you find these qualities for you as part of the home buying process.
Note: You will likely have to make some compromises to get what you want. But an informed compromise is better than an uniformed decision.
